3 Tips On How To Be Productive With Technology In 2009

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

At the beginning of every year, people set new goals, new resolutions, and vow to make improvements in their lives.  We’re almost two months into 2009.  How are you doing with those resolutions?

One of the problems people have is figuring out how to be more productive.  And with cell phones, emails, the Internet, and instant messaging, it’s easy to lose focus at work or home.

So in this article I wanted to show you 3 quick tips to help you combat the ‘negative’ effects of technology that many of us fall victim to.

In 2006, Microsoft research conducted a study to try to find out how long it takes for people to return to a task when they’re interrupted by an email or an instant message.

The results were not encouraging.

While the average “task recovery” time was pegged at 15 minutes, more than a quarter of the subjects didn’t return to the task at hand for two hours.

Dr. Eric Horvitz, the principal researcher for and the study’s co-author revealed: “We found that people, once interrupted, take the opportunity to do other things, like check more email. Or go to news or sports pages.”

Moreover, Horvitz adds, when people do finally start working again, they don’t reach their earlier level of concentration for 10 more minutes. Thus, the total time lost as a result of an email or instant messenger distraction is 30 minutes. The disturbing verdict: That’s the best case scenario.

Psychiatrist Dr. Ned Hallowell of the Hallowell Center concurs with the findings of the Microsoft Research study and suggests the following moves to keep you focused and help you become as productive as you can be:

1. Make your mornings count.

Hallowell points out that when people have a “morning burst.” This means they have a rush of energy and a sharper focus. So, as Hallowell advises, do about 60 to 90 minutes of work before you check your email or go online or turn on the TV. He adds: “We should all be ruthless about shielding [this time] from all distractions.”

2. Control yourself.

Instead of checking your email every hour, instead check it once in the morning and once in the evening.  Or try checking it at only 2 or 3 specific times each day.  You should also be just as disciplined with your instant messenger, and use of the Internet.

Learning to ignore disruptions and distractions is crucial to your productivity since it takes so long to get back on track once you’ve been interrupted.

3. Use Your Time Wisely.

Evaluate your Internet surfing habits and Television habits and come clean about how much time you spend doing these things.  Chances are you can cut several hours a week from your Internet and TV time to be more productive doing something else, like accomplishing your New Year’s Resolutions.

The bottom line is you want to use technology, but not be a slave to it.  I’ve heard several experts say that distractions are the number one reason why people having a hard time achieving their goals and being as successful as they’d like.

Don’t let that be you!

3 Great Options For Temporary Pain Relief…

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

As you know, many people come to see me seeking pain relief.  Whether it’s back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, or arthritis, my patients want a safe and natural solution that works.

My philosophy has always been offer pain relief as quickly as possible so that you can get on with your daily life, BUT ALSO heal the underlying condition that’s causing the pain.

The reason I take this approach is because if I only treat your pain and symptoms, and not the reason why you have the pain or symptoms, then even if you feel better, your body still has problems that have not been fixed.  And what do you think will happen if the underlying reason for having pain hasn’t been healed?  That’s right, the pain and symptoms will more than likely return.

The best results always happen when you focus on both…making you feel better AND healing your body.  Make sense?

With that being said, today I wanted to teach you a little bit about pain.  Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong.  Here’s how it works:

Pain begins with the peripheral nerves.  These nerves extend from your skin, muscles, and internal organs to your spinal cord.  These nerves may be sensitive to touch, movement, and even temperature changes.  When these nerves are stimulated, they send pain messages to your spinal cord.  These messages are then relayed to the brain.

Now that you know that pain involves the nerves, let’s talk about how you can get faster relief while you are getting chiropractic care.

As I just mentioned, your peripheral nerves are responsive to the sensations of hot and cold.  You can take advantage of this and prevent pain messages from reaching the brain by masking them with a different message.  Think hitting your thumb with a hammer and numbing the pain but instantly sucking on it.

How you do this is by using topical treatments to distract your nervous system from the pain you are experiencing.

One option you have is ice.  Putting ice on the area of pain is often useful at decreasing swelling and inflammation, as well as making the area feel better.  I recommend putting ice on a painful area for 15 to 20 minutes and then taking it off.  After 45 minutes, do it again if you like.  You can repeat this cycle of 15 to 20 minutes on…45 minutes off, as much as you need to.

Another option you have is heat.  Applying a heat pack to the area of pain can sometimes provide relief.  As a general rule of thumb, don’t use this in the first 72 hours of pain.  Heat is especially good for chronic pain because it dilates blood vessels in the area so you can get more nutrition and oxygen to the area.  Use the same advice with heat that I gave you for ice.

A third option is a topical treatment like BioFreeze.  This is a gel that you rub into the area of pain.  There are “pain masking” ingredients in BioFreeze that penetrate the skin and trigger a response in the nerves.

Now, even though these treatments won’t permanently eliminate your pain or fix the problem causing the pain like chiropractic care can, they can provide temporary relief that is often vital to getting through the day.

So try adding a few of these options to your chiropractic care.  You might find that it helps you when you aren’t feeling your best.

3 Spices To Use In Your Cooking That Could Save Your Life

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

When cooking, adding spices to the food really enhances the flavor and makes the meal more alive and fulfilling.

Today I wanted to share with you 3 spices you should be using consuming on a regular basis because of their health benefits.

The first spice is garlic.

Various studies show that garlic can prevent heart attacks, strengthen the immune system, as well as help the body fight diseases such as colon, breast, prostrate, and throat cancers. Researchers are conducting further trials to uncover more of this pungent spice’s medicinal benefits.

The second spice is chili pepper.

This hot spice is loaded with capsaicin, a compound that triggers the body to produce more heat and, thus, burn more energy. In 2007, in an article published in Physiology & Behavior, research teams from the Maastricht University in the Netherlands and the Laval University in Quebec, Canada reported that capsaicin may help fight obesity. Moreover, their findings indicated that capsaicin has cancer-fighting properties as well.

The third spice is ginger.

Last year, an article in Food and Chemical Toxicology revealed that various studies have found that ginger can lower both blood sugar and cholesterol levels. It also has powerful antioxidant properties that protect against the toxic effects or radiation treatment, ulcers, and skin diseases.

The powerful qualities of these three spices should encourage you to use them in your cooking.  Not only will they enhance the flavor of your meals, they will also provide many health benefits.  Hopefully, this would help you get into the habit of “spicing up” your life with foods that are good for you!

Have a great day!
